One of the worse things about acne is that if you are not careful you can be left with scars. Having acne scars, especially on your face, can make you feel embarrassed and self-conscious, so much so that it can effect your life.

Many of the treatments available to get rid of acne scars involve invasive surgical treatments. However, if there is a treatment that is 100% natural, has no known side effects and has been scientifically proven to successfully heal wounds and scars you’d want to know about it. Well, there is and it’s Manuka Honey.

Honey is not only good to eat on toast or to add to drinks, but also has been used in ancient cultures for its ability to fight infection. However, it’s only recently that research has proven that Manuka Honey can effectively treat acne scars and other wounds. Here we will look at where Manuka Honey comes from, how it works, the best type to use and how to apply it.

Where does Manuka Honey come from?

Manuka honey comes from the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), a native tree that grows wild in New Zealand.

Why does Manuka honey work?

Manuka honey contains amino acids, vitamins and minerals which help to inhibit bacteria, heal wounds and promote new tissue growth. Vitamin C especially plays a major role in collagen formation which is important for healthy skin. Manuka Honey also creates a protective barrier over the newly growing tissue to protect against infection.

How do I know what the best Manuka Honey is?

Active Manuka Honey is the best type of honey. Active Manuka honey works because of its UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) that refers to the potency of the antibacterial activity of the honey. The higher the UMF factor, the more powerful and stable the antibacterial properties are.

When choosing the best Manuka honey watch out for these points

•    Make sure the honey is genuine UMF Manuka Honey by checking that the name UMF is clear stated on front of the jar.

•    It should have the New Zealand UMF Licensee’s brand name and license number on the front label.

It should have a UMF rating of 10 or higher. If the UMF ratings are under 10 there is very low levels of activity, whilst more use levels are foun in ratings of 10-15, and even better are ratings of over 16.

You can purchase Active Manuka Honey in any good health food store.

How do you apply Manuka Honey?

To get rid of acne scarring on your face, apply the honey directly onto the scars and leave for as long as you can. It may seem a little strange to put honey on your face, but by applying the Manuka Honey twice daily you should start seeing the results within a few days.

You might not want to walk around with honey on your face during the day, so can you put a good amount of honey on a sterile dressing, place it over your scars and leave overnight. In order to prevent infections, make sure that you wash the affected area first before applying the dressing.

Now that you know that Manuka Honey has proven therapeutic properties that help to get rid of acne scars, you do not have to live with the embarrassment of these unsightly scars any longer.
